Technology Enabling Children (TEC) Tech Testing Site
The Technology Enabling Children (TEC) Tech Testing Site is a space where innovation and research meets family engagement. It is the goal of the centre to engage the entrepreneurs who are designing new and innovative technologies and adapt them for use in pediatric rehabilitation. We aim to find the Right Device for the Right Child at the Right Time.
Some of the projects currently ongoing at the TEC testing site include:
Virtual Reality for Distraction During Neurotoxin Injections:
Imagine you’re battling cartoon monsters, fully immersed in the virtual world and distracted from your surroundings. This is what the goal is for our rehab and interventional radiology teams who are providing neurotoxin injections for muscle spasticity. This study is looking at the ease of implementing this technology in the clinic, the experience for participants and their families, and whether VR is a viable alternative to sedation for certain populations.
Smart Hallway for Gait Analysis:
Using 3D video and AI pose analysis software to automate the analysis of gait patterns and provide objective measurements. This technology can be used to compare before and after for different interventions such as surgery, bracing/orthopedics, or therapy.

Brain to Computer Interface Clinical Programming:
The TEC Testing Site is working to establish a Brain to Computer Interface Clinic at CHEO to empower kids to think their way to independence! Using BCI headsets, kids can control all sorts of devices from toys to video games, and even smart home devices. The centre will conduct research alongside clinical care to look into the different ways BCI can be used for recreation, communication, and even mobility.
Bootle Blast Virtual and Augmented Reality Therapy:
In partnership with the team at Holland Bloorview, the TEC team will be researching the home-based use of a virtual and augmented reality system for arm mobility. It works on specific exercises from occupational and physical therapists in fun ways, using interactive games and activities.
